Celebration Gala – Canadian Association of South Asian Lawyers (CASAL)

As a current Vice-President of CASAL, I am pleased to announce our upcoming gala on May 29, 2009.

CASAL’s guest speaker will be The Honourable Chris Bentley, the Attorney General of Ontario.  The department of the Attorney General oversees Ontario’s justice system and we are honoured to have Attorney General Bentley join us.

Ontario Lawyers to Become More Expensive (Ontario’s PST Merging with the GST)?

The idea of merging Ontario’s PST (provincial sales tax – currently 8%) with Canada’s federal government GST (general sales tax – currently 5%) took one further step forward yesterday with speculation that this measure might be introduced as a part of tomorrow’s Ontario budget announcement.

 

 

 

A merger of the PST to the GST would likely affect legal fees – i.e. increase the cost of legal services to the Ontario consumer.

$13.6M Lottery Winnings Challenged – Hey, What About Me?

Case Comment – Chamberland v. Provincial (2008 Ontario Superior Court) per Kane, J.

 

  

This interesting case involved a group of garbage truck drivers who worked together for the City of Sudbury.  They pooled their money together, contributing approximately $5 to $10 per week in order to buy lottery tickets.

 

In July, 2005 they won $13.6 million dollars.

The winnings were split between 5 co-workers but 2 more co-workers started lawsuits seeking to be included in the lottery winnings.… Continue Reading
